Stann Creek District, Belize
Stann Creek District is where Belize’s Garifuna cultural heart meets rainforest adventure, citrus valleys, banana farms, Maya sites, Caribbean beaches, festivals, art, music, and living coastal traditions

Stann Creek is one of Belize’s most culturally rich and geographically diverse districts, stretching from the Maya Mountains and rainforest valleys to the Caribbean coast, offshore cayes, and beach communities. Located in southeastern Belize, the district is anchored by Dangriga, often described as Belize’s culture capital and one of the country’s most important centers of Garifuna life. Stann Creek’s landscape brings together Garifuna villages, Maya heritage, citrus and banana farms, rainforest reserves, waterfalls, coral reefs, and coastal communities such as Hopkins and Placencia.
The district is especially known for its Garifuna heritage. The Garinagu are descendants of West and Central Africans and Indigenous Caribbean peoples, with a history shaped by displacement from St. Vincent and resettlement along the Caribbean coast of Central America. In Belize, Dangriga and nearby communities such as Hopkins became major centers of Garifuna language, music, spirituality, food, drumming, dance, and community life. The annual Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 commemorates the arrival and endurance of the Garifuna people in Belize, with celebrations that include drumming, processions, church services, food, music, reenactments, and community gatherings.
Dangriga’s cultural importance is also tied to leaders such as Thomas Vincent Ramos, who helped organize the first Garifuna Settlement Day celebration in Dangriga in 1941. Today, visitors can learn more about Garifuna history and living traditions through cultural centers, drumming experiences, local festivals, traditional food such as hudut, and institutions such as the Gulisi Garifuna Museum.
Stann Creek’s economy and identity are also deeply connected to agriculture. The district is one of Belize’s major agricultural regions, especially for citrus, bananas, aquaculture, and other export crops. The Stann Creek Valley and the Hummingbird Highway corridor are lined with orchards, farms, villages, and agro-processing activity, while the Port of Big Creek plays an important role in moving agricultural exports. This agricultural landscape is an important part of the district’s story, connecting village life, food culture, labor history, and Belize’s national economy.
The district also contains important Maya and archaeological heritage. At Mayflower Bocawina National Park, visitors can explore rainforest trails, waterfalls, and ancient Maya ceremonial sites, including Mayflower, T’au Witz, and Maintzunum. The park connects the eastern Maya Mountains with the coastal region and preserves both archaeological remains and tropical forest ecosystems. Near Sittee River, the Serpon Sugar Mill adds another layer of history, marking Belize’s nineteenth-century industrial and agricultural past.
For nature and adventure, Stann Creek is one of Belize’s strongest districts. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary protects a large forested area on the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains and is famous for jaguar conservation, hiking, waterfalls, birding, and rainforest ecology. Hopkins and Placencia offer beach culture, Garifuna village life, sailing, snorkeling, diving, and access to Belize’s reef and offshore cayes. Together, these places make Stann Creek a district where culture, ecology, agriculture, art, music, and adventure are closely connected.
