Orange Walk District
"Home of Sugar City"

Orange Walk District, affectionately known as “Sugar Cane Country” and home to “Sugar City,” is one of Belize’s great northern cultural landscapes. Located about 55 miles north of Belize City and within easy reach of the Mexican border, the district blends ancient Maya history, Yucatec Maya and Mestizo traditions, fertile farmland, river journeys, wildlife reserves, and some of Belize’s most beloved food culture.
Long before modern Orange Walk developed, this region was part of the Maya world. The district is home to major archaeological sites, especially Lamanai, located near Indian Church Village along the New River Lagoon. Lamanai’s name means “Submerged Crocodile,” and the site is remarkable for its long occupation history, with evidence dating from around 1500 B.C. through the colonial period, including remains of Spanish churches and a British sugar mill.
Orange Walk’s modern culture was deeply shaped by Yucatec Maya and Mestizo communities, especially after people fled the Caste War of Yucatán in the 19th century and settled in northern Belize. Today, Spanish, English, Kriol, Yucatec Maya traditions, Catholic festivals, village fiestas, marimba music, traditional dress, farming life, and family-centered food culture all contribute to the district’s identity.
Agriculture remains central to Orange Walk’s economy and landscape. Sugar cane is the district’s signature crop, giving the region its famous nickname, but farms also produce corn, rice, vegetables, citrus, cattle, dairy products, and other local goods. Mennonite farming communities, Maya and Mestizo villages, and long-established cane farmers all help define the district’s rural character.
For visitors, Orange Walk offers a rich mix of experiences: boat trips along the New River, birdwatching and wildlife in protected areas, archaeological exploration at Lamanai, Cuello, Nohmul, San Estevan, and nearby forest reserves, plus food-centered traditions in Orange Walk Town. The district is especially known for tacos, salbutes, panades, tamales, cochinita pibil, escabeche, chimole, fresh juices, and sweets rooted in northern Belize’s Maya-Mestizo heritage.
Festivals and community celebrations give Orange Walk its lively public culture. Events such as FiestaRama, the Sugar Cane Festival, village patron-saint celebrations, Independence season activities, and food festivals bring together music, dance, parades, local businesses, artists, farmers, and families.
Orange Walk is more than a stop on the road north. It is a living cultural region where Maya history, Mestizo identity, farming knowledge, river ecology, food traditions, and Belizean creativity meet. From the temples of Lamanai to the cane fields of Tower Hill, from the New River to the town’s taco stands and festivals, Orange Walk is rich in history, proud in culture, and sweet by nature.
Today, Orange Walk is known for its fertile cane fields, farming villages, river landscapes, and strong agricultural identity. Sugar cane remains central to the district’s economy and identity, while farms also produce corn, rice, vegetables, citrus, dairy, cattle, and other local goods. Visitors are drawn to New River boat tours, wildlife viewing, Lamanai Archaeological Reserve, Rio Bravo Conservation Area, Honey Camp Lagoon, village life, local markets, and the district’s celebrated food culture, especially tacos, tamales, salbutes, panades, cochinita pibil, escabeche, and fresh tropical juices.
Orange Walk’s cultural calendar includes community fiestas, Independence celebrations, religious feast days, the Sugar Cane Festival, and food-centered events such as Orange Walk Tacos Fest, where music, dance, crafts, local art, farming heritage, and family traditions come together. With its ancient Maya legacy, Mestizo warmth, agricultural strength, creative traditions, and unforgettable cuisine, Orange Walk offers a vivid portrait of northern Belize’s history, culture, and everyday life.
